about

Every day, a ball is raised atop the old observatory at Greenwich and falls precisely at one o’clock to signal to the assembled fleet (or nowadays the tourists) that it is noon Greenwich Mean Time. Further confusion is added if you look at the 24 hour clock on the meridian line, which at this precise time seems to be saying 6 o’clock.
